Carpentry Australia: Investing in the Future of Our Industry

At Carpentry Australia, we believe in the power of the next generation. Since our inception, we have made it our mission to support apprentices across the country, ensuring they have the resources, mentorship, and opportunities needed to succeed. This is why we fully sponsor the cost of all apprentice memberships nationwide, a commitment that has seen us invest over $2.4 million in subsidised membership costs since 2012.

Supporting the Future of the Carpentry Industry

The carpentry industry is only as strong as its workforce, and that workforce begins with apprentices. Unfortunately, apprenticeship completion rates remain a significant challenge in Australia, with many young people struggling to find the right employer or facing barriers that prevent them from completing their training.

At Carpentry Australia, we take our responsibility seriously in helping drive these completion rates up. By removing financial barriers to membership, we ensure every apprentice has access to crucial industry support, job opportunities, networking, and training resources. This is more than just a financial contribution, it’s about playing our part in shaping the future of the industry.

Connecting Apprentices with the Right Employers

A key challenge for apprentices is finding the right employer, one that values their development, invests in their growth, and provides a safe and supportive work environment. Through our apprentice membership program, we actively connect young carpenters with reputable employers who align with industry best practices.

As part of this initiative, we engage directly with apprentices, offering mentorship, training, and guidance on navigating their careers. We also support them in addressing workplace challenges, ensuring they know their rights and the options available to them should they encounter difficulties with their employer.

Leading Industry Readiness Through the CarpentHER Program

Beyond supporting apprentices directly, we recognise our social responsibility in shaping a more inclusive and diverse industry. That’s why we are leading the CarpentHER program in partnership with the NSW Government. This initiative not only provides pathways for women entering the trade but also encourages businesses to register as ’employers of choice.’

Employers of choice showcase their commitment to diversity, inclusion, and a positive workplace culture, making them attractive to top talent. To support these businesses, we facilitate training in workplace readiness, ensuring they are well-prepared to integrate and support diverse teams successfully.

Hands-On Support at Trade Schools Across Australia

We don’t just talk about support, we actively bring it to apprentices. Our dedicated team, supported by our generous sponsors, visits trade schools nationwide to engage directly with apprentices. These visits offer hands-on experiences with the latest technology, tools, and techniques, as well as access to Carpentry Australia merchandise.

Beyond the practical skills training, we create safe spaces for apprentices to have private discussions about workplace challenges, career advice, and support options. Many apprentices also gain inspiration from our ‘Carpentry Australia Champions,’ experienced tradespeople who share valuable insights and personal experiences to guide and motivate the next generation.

A Long Term Commitment to the Industry

Sponsoring apprentice memberships is just one of the many ways Carpentry Australia invests in the future of the trade. We are dedicated to ensuring that every young carpenter has the support they need to complete their training, find the right employer, and contribute to a thriving, diverse, and sustainable industry.

By investing over $2.4 million to date in subsidised membership costs, we are not only helping individuals but strengthening the entire industry. Through mentorship, workplace advocacy, employer partnerships, and hands on training, we are keeping the hammer swinging for longer, ensuring that Australia’s carpentry industry continues to grow and thrive for generations to come.
